Eto Eiko Sensei

Eto Eiko sensei was born in Ooita in 1930, and is a living bridge to the sad and harsh times of post War Japan.  During WWII, she studied nursing and received her license in 1949.  She bore that harsh experience and finally got happily married in 1952 and gave a birth to a baby boy, however, a few years later she lost her husband to sickness. The death of her beloved husband became an important turning point for her life.  She started practicing martial arts seriously in order to polish herself into a mentally and physically strong independent woman.  When she started practicing martial arts, Japanese society was not very understanding towards a woman who wished to balance both work, practice in the martial arts at a nationally competitive level and the raising of her child by herself.  She must have experienced many difficulties, however, she got many good minded people’s support and bore this hard time.  She has finally became a mentor for many women now.

Eiko-Sensei has been practicing various subjects.  She has learned not only Japanese traditional skills and Martial Arts, but also she was talented at ballroom dancing, pool and obtained both drivers and pilot licenses.  At her age, it is very rare to hold drivers and pilot licenses especially for ladies.  She has practiced Iaido, Jodo and Kendo for more than 45 years, and now holds 7th dan in all these arts.  Most noteworthy, she is a direct student of Otofuji sensei, and is currently practicing under Namitome sensei in Fukuoka.  She has been interviewed by and appeared in many TV programs, newspapers and magazines.  She has published 2 autobiographies “Kurenai no Ken no Mai” published in 1969 and “Bugei 88 Dan”, the latest book “Bugei 88 Dan” was just published last year in September.

Eto Tomoko Sensei

Tomoko sensei was born in Akita and practiced Aikido as a teenage.  When she was 18, she read Eto Eiko sensei’s first autobiography “Kurenai no Ken no Mai”, and she decided to be Eiko sensei’s live in student.  She never stopped practice and practiced under Eiko-sensei for 10 years without going home even once.  Then she was adopted into the Eto family and practiced even harder under Eiko sensei.  Her passion toward martial arts was extremely serious and her commitment is expressed well by her comments to the effect that “I (she) married (the) to Martial Arts”.  Tomoko-sensei has also practiced various others kinds of martial arts, and now holds 7th dan in Iaido and Jodo, and 5th Dan in Kendo.

Their Dojo the “Ei Shin Kan” in Hakata is always full of the vigor and passion of eager students, from those as young as 5 to senior adults.  This passion has made their students very strong and they now have two budding champions, one at the Kyushu area elementary class kendo, and the other one at the high school level Iaido.  Both sensei continue to practice hard, starting in the early morning and any time when they find a moment during their working day.  They have won many Kyushu area tournaments and their skills for these martial arts are breathtakingly exquisite.  Especially they have practiced together for more than 20 years and their Tanjo-jutsu demonstrations are worth asking to see, due to their sharpness and perfect harmony.
