Introduction to Bonsai 2004


Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing a tree in a container. It is a meditative discipline connecting art with horticulture. This session will discuss: the development of Bonsai as an art form related to the Japanese reverence for nature, understanding and appreciating style and presentation, how to choose a tree, techniques for creating a bonsai and tips for its care and maintenance. A Bonsai will be created as a demonstration. A visit to see a Japanese style Bonsai collection and garden is offered.

Instructor:

Michelle McMillan, importer and distributor of traditional Japanese wares through her company KI DESIGN, has been specializing in bonsai, including teaching this art form, since 1988. She has demonstrated the Art of Bonsai at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto, as a part of "Caravan's" Tokyo Pavilion festivities. She was an original member of the Guelph Bonsai Club and sat on the organizing committee of the Southwestern Ontario Bonsai Show, held at the Arboretum, University of Guelph, for several years; an annual event featuring Bonsai, Taiko and demonstrations of Japanese Martial Arts, including Iaido by Sei Do Kai.
