4th Annual Summer Seminar

August 12th – 15th, 2010

The Ka Muso Kai (formerly Calgary Iaido Club) is happy to present its 4th Annual Summer Seminar.  The seminar will offer Kage Ryu and Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu instructed by Menkyo Hyakutake Colin Watkin Sensei, and Jodo taught by Kim Taylor Sensei.

Participants are welcome to register in any or all three of the Martial Arts.  Registration forms can be found at the link below, and when filled out can be sent, along with payment (made out to the Calgary Iaido Club), to Chris Gilham at 9 Coachway Green SW, Calgary, Alberta. T3H 1V9

Note:   Weather permitting there will likely be additional Jodo and Niten Sessions (Each art is only scheduled for one session per day, however both arts will probably run for two sessions – at the discretion of the teacher).

All training sessions will be held at the Ka Muso Kai’s Dojo, at St. Matthew’s United Church, 2039 26A ST SW Calgary, AB (Note: Please enter through the Glass Doors on 26A Street).

Sensei:

Watkin Sensei: Colin Hyakutake Watkin holds Menkyo in Niten Ichi Ryu and is kaiin (member) of the Kage Ryu. He is the webmaster of Hyoho.com and has visited us since 2007.

Taylor Sensei: Kim Taylor is the Chief Instructor at the Sei Do Kai dojo in Guelph Ontario. He holds a seventh dan in Iaido and a fifth dan in Jodo. Taylor Sensei has played an active role in the traditional Japanese martial arts in Canada and has visited us since 2008.

Equipment Needed: Saya Bokuto

Kage Ryu is a 16th Century Choken (long sword) Battojutsu (drawing art) passed down through the Tachibana clan. For more information, please read the following websites:

Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu

Equipment Needed: Daisho (One Daito/Longsword and one Shoto/Shortsword - wooden)

Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu (Strategy of two heavens under one school) is a kenjutsu (sword art) school founded by the famous 17th century samurai Miyamoto Musashi (best known for his book of five rings). Techniques are done in pairs with wooden swords and are prearranged.

Jodo

Equipment Needed: One Bokuto and one Jo

Jodo (way of the staff) is a traditional short staff art. It is a combative art that involves paired kata; one side with sword, and the other with staff.
